I love an old castle ruin. I try to wonder what it must have been like in its heyday. Exploring the Castello di San Michele in Santa Maria del Cedro was no exception. This castle dates back to the Norman era in the 11th century; however, the hill and site itself dates back even further to the Byzantine/Basilian monastic presence. Good thing I wore my exploring boots. It is too bad that I picked the wrong color to stand out from the castle. Next time I’ll know better. Castles deserve red.

Adoro le antiche rovine dei castelli. Cerco di immaginare come doveva essere ai tempi del suo massimo splendore. Esplorare il Castello di San Michele a Santa Maria del Cedro non ha fatto eccezione. Questo castello risale all’epoca normanna, nell’XI secolo; tuttavia, la collina e il sito stesso hanno origini ancora più remote, legate alla presenza monastica bizantina e basiliana. Meno male che indossavo i miei stivali da esplorazione. Peccato, però, aver scelto il colore sbagliato per risaltare sullo sfondo del castello. La prossima volta saprò regolarmi meglio. I castelli meritano il rosso.
